Land Use Department
Headquarters
LRIS is a web-based GIS platform developed by the Land Use Department, Kerala and Digital University Kerala to empower local bodies with scientific data for sustainable land and resource planning. Now upgraded to LRIS 2.0, it offers an intuitive interface with updated land use data to support GIS-based grassroot-level planning.
Empowering Kerala’s land governance, the Land Use Department drives sustainable planning and GIS solutions for effective resource management across the state.
Originally established in 1975 as the Kerala State Land Use Board under the Department
of Planning and
Economic Affairs, the organization has evolved over decades of dedicated service. In
2007, it was
declared a State Government Department, and in 2025, it was renamed as the Land
Use
Department.
The department plays a pivotal role in formulating land use policies and providing
strategic advice on
sustainable utilization of land resources—soil, water, and bio-resources. It also serves
as a vital GIS
resource center, supporting various line departments in planning, implementation, and
monitoring of
developmental initiatives.
Promoting spatial data technologies for effective local-level planning through innovative software tools designed for data management, modeling, and operational research. This includes hands-on demonstrations, capacity building, and real-world applications to support evidence-based decision-making.
Creation of a spatial geo-database integrating land and water resource information with geo-referenced cadastral maps. The platform is built using modern web technologies based on Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) and developed entirely with open-source tools and standards.
Web-based application accessible through any standard browser with an intuitive interface. Enables dissemination of resource information to grassroots stakeholders, supporting informed decision-making and effective developmental planning.
Promotes the adoption of spatial data technologies in local-level planning, supports data management, modeling, and operational research through specialized software tools, encourages research and development in spatial technologies, and enables technology transfer and capacity building for end users.
Spatial depiction of land & water resource information integrated with geo referenced cadastral database. State-of-the-art web technology tools and systems conforming to Services Oriented Architecture. The Web GIS application is developed using Open Source Tools and Standards.
The entire application is Web based and can be accessed through any standard web browser with user-friendly navigational approach. Disseminate resource information to the people at grass root level for supporting decision making and developmental planning.
